Common Sense Parenting – Mayo

Common Sense Parenting is a skill based programme where parents learn and practice practical and effective ways to encourage their children’s positive behaviour, to teach children alternatives to problem behaviour and to discourage children’s negative behaviour.

Parents learn to develop their own Calm Plan when dealing with difficult behaviours and to teach children strategies in how to develop their own calming-down in intense situations.

Parents learn to use consequences to encourage or change behaviours, to develop positive methods of discipline with their children and to teach their children skills helpful for interpersonal interactions.

It is available for two age groups:

  • For parents of children aged 2-6 years

  • facilitated by Public Health Nurses
  • 7 weeks for two hours per session

  • For parents of children aged 6-16 years

  • facilitated by qualified Parent Trainers within Tusla
  • 6 weeks for two hours per session

Common Sense Parenting is available at various locations in the local community in Spring and Autumn.

There is a once off cost of €20 which covers a Parent book and bound workbook.
